This piece was made up of over 100 ceramic tiles that were created by hand-throwing slabs, a violent process that often tears the clay and leaves gouges in the surface. They were then carefully loaded into the kiln while still wet, to avoid shattering the bone-dry clay, and then surfaced with a wash of red iron oxide. Most materials that are used in ceramics can be found in the human body, but I chose to use red iron oxide because of its direct reference to blood and the blushing that can take place under the surface of the skin. When the viewer moves closer to the pieces, they will notice an array of small ceramic barbs that are protruding through the tiles and a similar amount of rusted steel nails that are entering the tiles from the opposite direction. The ceramic barbs signify the internal emotion that is seeping through the skin and the nails represent the harm that is caused by the “outsider”. This outside harm is often the motivator or cause of the internal emotion, creating a never-ending loop of harm.
